Post-Operative Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery should reflect your operation, surgical guidance and individual recovery. Physiotherapy planning can focus on practical movement, strength and confidence with everyday tasks.
Care tailored to your needs
Rehabilitation planned around your surgery
Your recovery plan is individual. Surgical precautions, current mobility and personal goals guide the pace and choice of rehabilitation.
An individual starting point
Before rehabilitation begins, your physiotherapist will discuss the operation, your current symptoms, relevant medical history and the guidance from your surgical team. Please bring discharge information, exercise advice and details of any restrictions. This helps establish whether physiotherapy is suitable and what can be assessed safely.
An initial review may consider walking, transfers, joint movement and confidence with daily activities. A plan can then be agreed around realistic priorities, rather than a fixed timetable or a promise about recovery.
Knee replacement rehabilitation
Following a knee replacement, rehabilitation may involve reviewing movement, walking patterns, muscle control and everyday activities such as getting up from a chair. Exercises and activity are adapted to your stage of recovery and the instructions you have received.
Your physiotherapist can help you understand your exercise plan and review how you are managing between appointments. Pain, swelling, fatigue and other concerns should be discussed so the plan can be adjusted or medical advice sought where needed.
Hip replacement rehabilitation
After a hip replacement, physiotherapy planning may include walking, transfers, strength and confidence with everyday movement. The type of operation and any precautions given by your surgeon remain central to the approach.
Please do not change prescribed precautions or stop using walking aids solely on the basis of general website advice. Your plan should follow your own surgical instructions and an assessment of your current ability.
Mobility and strength recovery
Rehabilitation may include graded exercises, practice of functional tasks and advice about balancing activity with rest. Your home environment, stairs, equipment and support network can influence what is practical.
Reviews help identify whether exercises need progressing, simplifying or changing. Recovery varies between people, and the number and format of appointments will depend on your needs and response.
Working with your wider care team
Physiotherapy complements the advice of your surgeon, GP and other professionals involved in your recovery. Where appropriate and with your consent, relevant information can be shared to support consistent planning.
New or worsening symptoms, wound concerns or a change in your general health may need medical review before rehabilitation continues. Follow your discharge advice about when and how to seek help.
Availability and appointment setting
Please contact PhysioRemedy before booking so we can discuss suitability and the appointment options for this service.
A home visit may be useful when travel is difficult or daily activities need reviewing in your own environment. Some exercise reviews may be suitable online, while other needs require in-person assessment. The appropriate option will be discussed individually.
